Liberation?

Oil on Linen
850 x 450mm

This is a study of the magnificent bronze sculpture depicting a group of islanders celebrating the liberation of the island of Jersey from the German Occupation Forces.

The bronze sits proudly as a centre piece of Liberation Square in the heart of St Helier until its recent development into yet another tacky anonymous shopping outlet fronted-up by an emblem of low rent commercialism in the form of a 'Pasty Presto' outlet.

In forming the backdrop to these bronzes the painting explores the juxtaposition of values therein - the profound hope for a brave new world captured in the poise and expressions of the subjects, set against the garish font of naked commercialism….it may be my imagination, but it seems written into his resignatory expression
