Known locally as 'Matt the Hat' this sitter is grandson of a distinguished Jersey painter Francis William Synge Le Maistre, and also something of an art historian - having one drink with him is the equivalent of at least three chapters of any art history book.
We painted this on a november morning so dreary I had to light-up his face with a uv lamp to get some colour and definition.
Two and a half hours later the canvas was saturated my palette was saturated and virtually every brush I owned was full of paint so there it finished.
It caught something in him...hence the name.!
